Motor Vehicle Record

A motor vehicle record (MVR) is an official report that outlines an individual’s driving history, including accidents, traffic violations, license status, and other driving-related events.

MVRs are issued by state agencies, typically a department or bureau of motor vehicles, and are commonly used by employers to evaluate drivers in roles that involve business-related driving.

Many companies run MVR checks during the hiring process and as part of ongoing compliance programs. These checks are often handled through third-party providers and help confirm that drivers meet company safety and eligibility standards.

The information in an MVR can also affect insurance. Drivers with a history of accidents or violations may face higher premiums or limited coverage options due to increased risk.

In mileage reimbursement programs, MVRs are one part of a broader approach to managing driver risk. They help organizations ensure that employees who drive for work are qualified, compliant, and aligned with company policies.
